Ah…. Tuesday…. and an end to the tv doldrums…

Looks like the tv networks are now on their death march to the end of the US tv season. It’s been a long rerun month but now that May sweeps are almost upon us… things are looking up.

Phew…. four more weeks of new regular season shows
and then June through September where the only new shows are on the anti-networks (aka cable) or the talk shows.

There has to be a better way…

I’m old-school html. I’ve been doing it by hand for over six years now. I don’t mind putting html tags in things I’m blogging but there is something missing. The Mac OS X / Radio interface (Internet Explorer 5.1) works fine except when trying to enter long streams of text in that 9×70 text box. Sort of impedes the flow of thought.

Why can’t we have WYSIWY(a)G [What You See Is almost What You Get] on OS X also ? Will Leshner has Radio Poster but for my needs it really doesn’t scratch the right itch. It does exactly what it says but I want something more. Something too vague to be articulated yet…

Somewhere there seems to be a Word + Word Basic method but my version of Word is way too old.

Squeak can’t talk to Radio… so that’s out… unless I figure iut out myself… or borrow someone else’s XML-RPC stuff as a starting point.

Another Saturday evening of channel surfing

Apparently I need to get a life…

Today’s choice -

  • Armageddon
Not sure why it’s exciting even though I’ve seen it before and the plot is only vaguely existant. Must be because Bruce Willis does his usual good job at being the loner getting the job done in the face of clueless government interference.
  • The Thomas Crown Affair
I’ve got this one on DVD and even in a few minutes of watching the broadcast version can see they’ve hacked it to bits. I’m afraid to watch the final robbery. It’s probablyh mangled so that it doesn’t flow the way it should.

When…. ?

When do you let a magazine subscription run out ?

  • When you move
  • Run out of money
  • It no longer gives you what you want..
  • Some other reason…

I’m not really sure….. but of the four I actually pay for (others come with membership in something so they follow me around based on where I tell an organization I’m living.), one I’ll let run out, another I’ll cancel, one I’ll keep, and one I’m not sure yet…
when I move later this year…

And will I renew the ones I let lapse (yes)or cancel (possibly)….

Of course, these are also the only ones left that I subscribe to that still are better on paper than on the Internet. I’ve let most other magazines lapse over the past few years as other information sources have gotten better……

Goals

What is the goal ? Do I really care if no one comments on what I write ? Or is the goal really to write things that people will comment on ?

Mario Puzo, the author of The Godfather, spent his whole life disappointed that he never gained fame for works of literature but became rich for his story telling in such things as The Godfather. According to family, it wasn’t until the end of his life that he accepted that.

Is blogging story telling or literature ? And whose stories ?

And the winner is…

Jolt Cola followed by Mountain Dew + eight hours driving ( 75% of it on VT & NH interstate highways) can lead to a sleep preventing buzz….. Yikes, not even catching up on 3 days worth of e-mail could cure that.

Snow in late April…

Who would have thought….. thought it was late enough to take the snow tires off… oops.

Book of the week

From CSPAN’s “BOOKtv” where they have an author talk about their latest book.
Tammy Bruce, a very articulate speaker, wrote a book “The New Thought Police” that looks like it could be interesting.

What better way to spend the evening getting than getting VMS running on SIMH.

Given a choice….

What’s the better entertainment value ? A Bing Crosby/Frank Senatra movie on PBS, a Meryl Streep movie on Bravo, a Fred Astaire movie or Brendan Frasier in The Mummy ? Unfortunately, it’s a bit hard to channel surf all those movies at once and still follow what is going on.

Looking for something different on a Monday evening…

Hmmmm…. in the dim past Ally McBeal was watchable television. The last year has been a bit slow and forgettable since Larry (Robert Downey Jr.) left. Well… tonight there wasn’t anything else on. So what kind of show do we have & and what plot/stories:

  • The Ally + the plumber (Jon Bon Jovi) romance – Zzzz…exercise the remote… channel surfing. What does Ally see in him ?
  • Ally vs. a character played by Matthew Perry - hmmm. Good conflict, some humour
  • The Lolita ( Christina Ricci ) vs. the firm – a good example of classic Ally humour but will they continue to give her this kind of material during her guest stint ?
  • The Dame Edna romance – ewww….

So, in two hours on a Monday night, we get a 50% hit rate. Not bad. Too bad it’s due to stunt casting and won’t last.

Well…. if I don’t get audited, it looks like I might come out ahead with the IRS. Won’t find out for a few weeks.

The Taxman Cometh…

Any minute now I’ll wander down to my office and start up Tubotax and do my taxes…. and if I’m lucky I’ll even come out ahead of the IRS this year. If all goes well I’ll get it to the post office by noon.

I’ve never had a problem paying taxes. It’s the price of a civilized society. The amount and who gets it is always a concern but not the concept.

Attack of the anti-blond teen singer ?

Somebody must think we’re tired of all the Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera clones. Added to Michelle Branch and Nora Jones we now have
Vanessa Carlton.
Unfortunately, she seemed a bit lost on the Tonight Show last night when she did the one song she seems to have out so it’s hard to tell how good she actually might be.

It wouldn’t be fair to critique the different websites but it does appear that blonds have more psuedo-slick corporate sites while the others have simple sites.

It’s all downhill from here…

Once David Letterman does his Top Ten for the evening there really isn’t anything worth watching on tv tonight. Once again there are better commercials on than shows – tonight it’s The Blueman Group with ads for an upcoming appearance in Boston.

Happy Birthday Dave!

It’s David Letterman’s birthday (April 12th ?) so Regis Philbin brought him a cake and an opportunity to grope the two “game show like” models
(though actually he only seems to get rather close to the brunet model whenever she is on. Hmmmm…)
